Loads of people I talk to think it would be great to have an
owl- and it is- but there are a few things you need to consider before making
that decision
| It is a long term commitment |
Owls in captivity can live for up to 45yrs- I'll be looking
after some I have now when I'm 80 yrs old!! |
| Owls eat dead things |
You must be prepared to keep, prepare and clean up dead
chicks/mice and rats |
| Owls are not cheap |
You can pay up to £1000 for a great grey owl |
| Looking after an Owl is not cheap |
Each aviary I build costs around £1000- you need a freezer
for the food- gloves- and an endless supply of food |
| Owls do not make good pets |
Barn Owls sleep all day!- you will rarely see them. Owls do
not enjoy being stroked and they cannot be litter trained! |
| Owls make a mess! |
Uneaten food, faeces, feathers-cleaning has to be done
on a daily basis |
| Don't expect to have a holiday |
there are no kennels for owls-they do not take well to
strangers feeding them. It is a 7 day a week/365 day a year commitment for
45 years!! |
| Owls need exercise |
unless you have a very large aviary- your owl will need
flying every day- usually in the morning whilst you wish you were in bed
or in the evening-about the time the soaps start!! |
